Palma: The Elegant Capital of the Mediterranean
Palma is much more than a gateway to the island’s beaches; it is a vibrant city full of culture, stunning architecture, and top-notch gastronomy.
The Old Town and the Cathedral
The heart of the city is its historic center, a maze of narrow streets and stately courtyards.
La Seu (Cathedral of Mallorca): The city’s symbol. This Gothic masterpiece is famous for its enormous rose window (the “Eye of Gothic”) and the interior renovations by Antoni Gaudí and Miquel Barceló. Located right by the sea, it enjoys a unique light.
The Royal Palace of Almudaina: Located next to the cathedral, this palace of Arab origin showcases the island’s rich history.
Castles and Views
Bellver Castle: One of the few circular-plan castles in Europe. Situated on a hill surrounded by pine trees, it offers the best panoramic views of Palma Bay and the Serra de Tramuntana.
Life and Style in Palma
Santa Catalina: Formerly a fishermen’s neighborhood, today it is the coolest area of the city. Its central market is perfect for tapas and enjoying a bohemian atmosphere.
The Paseo Marítimo: Ideal for walking, skating, or cycling along the yachts and the sea.
Paseo del Borne: Known as the “Golden Mile,” this elegant avenue is filled with luxury shops, historic cafés, and modernist buildings.
Gastronomy
You cannot leave Palma without trying an artisanal ensaimada from one of its historic pastry shops or enjoying a “variat” (a mix of local tapas) in the city’s markets.
